My Students

The students that are in my Science/ELA classroom enjoy moving around the room to do classwork and completing stations that further engage them in learning the curriculum. In my classroom, I have circle tables that seat up to 4 students, squiggly shaped desks that can seat up to 6 students as necessary, as well as bean bags/rugs and clipboards for adequate space for station work.

I need help with providing station materials that are new to my students because this is the most engaging thing for them and something that they really look forward to doing each week in class.

Teachers at our school are encouraged to work on the workshop model of teaching. The workshop model is modeled after Lucy Calkins in ELA which I already do with them. This is where we do mini lessons (10 min. max.), workshop small group/station time (15 min.), and independent work with feedback and mid-workshop moments (30 min.) to supplement their learning experiences. I would like to implement this workshop model with Science as well so I would love to get materials that would benefit ELA and Science curriculum for my students to complete fun station activities.

My Project

Stations allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Making sure students are given multiple learning opportunities with different hands-on activities is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given the ability to work in station groups. They are more engaged and get more work completed than when they are doing whole group learning or independent work when given this opportunity to work in small group stations.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and willing to try new things when they are given the choice of stations.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional station activity options to make learning more effective in the classroom. The items such as the plant part model, energy ball, and hand boiler will teach critical science standards in 6th grades that give them the opportunity to explore learning and explain what they are doing through hands-on learning. Hands-on learning is very beneficial for my students that learn best that way. The table stands and magnetic curtain rod will allow me to display anchor charts and directions for the stations so it is easily accessible to them. The Bingo chips and Banagrams will be used as education games to practice important new vocabulary words for 6th grade Science or ELA as fun review. The earbuds will be useful for BrainPOP/educational videos or when students want to create their own videos to teach other students about a topic in ELA or Science using something like Flipgrid.

I have seen how choice in different activities and hands-on learning through stations can positively affect my students work and demeanor towards learning in the classroom.
