Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach at a Head Start through 5th grade elementary school. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument, much less to learn how to write or compose music. I was able to have several music projects funded throughout the years that allowed me to extend my program in terms of strings, percussion, and recorders. Although most of my students are of Haitian-American heritage, we pride ourselves in being diverse as our teaching staff come from many countries and ethnic backgrounds.

Even though I serve a community that is high poverty, my students have found comfort and stability through music and the performing arts.

They also bring joy wherever and whenever they perform in the community and for the school population.

Since 2007, I have managed my music program using materials from DonorsChoose.org projects and purchasing out of pocket, but now help is once again needed to extend our music program.

My Project

A little over a year ago, we started a percussion program. Out of that, emerged our marching band program for sports day and home games. There are only 12 sets of drums, which have to be shared among 30 plus talented drummers.

My students need one 14 x 12 snare drum with the carrier for our teams' Marching Band.

We are desperately trying to get more marching drums so that there would be at least enough for half of the students in the band. We need at last seven more drums but we will try to attain them one at a time until we have enough for our new marching band. The snare drum with the carrier would assist us as most of our students play this drum compared to the other ranges.
