My students need to accompany our new school band with a great snare sound and some awesome drum rolls. It will be quite difficult without an actual snare drum.
My students are from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
We are a K-8 public school in an urban community filled with enjoyment of the arts. The students are so motivated and committed to the arts that most of them go to after school and weekend programs outside of school to participate in ballroom dance and piano lessons. They are so excited to begin this band program, and I would hate to see their hard work and dedication suffer because we do not have snare drums.
My Project
With the addition of a snare drum, the students will be able to properly play all the rudiments and beats required for our music. They can also go further with snare drum and apply what they learned on snare to play more complex beats on a drum set. Drums offer a very large chance of success for a student. The snare drum is one instrument many kids love. It's something they heard in rock bands, hip hop songs, and pop music. They will be able to learn how to play this instrument they know and love and will be able to take that knowledge with them forever. Years down the road they can join community bands, possibly even a little jam band.
In our school, there are not many extracurricular activities for the students to participate in.
There are no sports teams and very few clubs. This band program has sparked a great fire within these students to be a part of something great. If we can get a snare drum into our band, the students will be able to play their first march and do their first real drum rolls. The beats and rudiments they hear will now be something that they can play.
