While some describe students by their disabilities, I always plan for their -abilities. When teaching 13 students from grades 1st to 3rd, differentiation in the areas of reading, writing, fine motor, and mathematics is critical for progress yet difficult for lesson planning. Each student has a unique set of strengths and areas of deficit. I strive to make learning fun, challenging and accessible to every student through the implementation of 21st-century technology and hands-on experimentation.
My students have moderate to severe disabilities, with varying degrees of deficit in communication, language, emotional regulation, and grade level ability.
Every day they work tirelessly to improve their skills. However, academics and fine motor always prove to be difficult and frustrating for many, if not all of my students. With a common deficit area being fine motor skills, many of my students receive extra support through occupational therapy. Despite this extra service, supplemental curriculum and accommodations are needed to meet the needs of my students.
My Project
Through the use of two consistent classroom iPad Airs, numerous learning opportunities will be opened for my students with moderate to severe disabilities to become more independent. As an educator, I have high expectations for each student in my classroom. In turn, the students thrive when given the opportunity.
To meet the needs of various ages, abilities, and interests, a multi-modality approach to learning is used during academics.
Many of my students cannot independently complete or access the general education curriculum in a traditional manner, such as pencil and paper. However, this does not eliminate them from being given the opportunity to complete the same worksheet. Through the use of two iPad Airs, any student will be able to access the general education curriculum despite their fine motor ability.
