I currently teach a superstar group of kindergarten students of all ability levels. These students come into my room with a variety of experiences and new ideas. They are so full of life that each one could teach us all about what is important in life. What makes them even more unique is that many come from low-income families but you would not know that by their attitudes. Each and everyday they hold their heads high and are ready to put their best foot forward to meet my expectations for them.

As their teacher I want to capture their best everyday. Whether it is something fun during recess or a writing experience that is out of this world. Unfortunately, I do not have a way to catch these candid moments so people can enjoy them as much as I do. Often I rely on parents when on field trips to email pictures of the students so I can post them on my website. I would love to have a camera to help show families, the community, and people everywhere what life is like in kindergarten.

I believe having a camera will allow my students to share important moments in and out of the room that their parents do not get see. My students will be able to take pictures of patterns they are creating or other mathematical related activities. They will be able to show their parents the hands-on learning that is taking place. Students will also be able to take pictures of activities they are participating in during particular units. For example, we will be creating gingerbread men glyphs in January, that will describe each child, and they will be able to take pictures of these gingerbread men to create a digital storybook using PowerPoint. One of the most important things that this camera will allow my students to do is post their journal writing so they can share their work with everyone. I want the other students in our building to see who is creating these wonderful stories so they can put a face with the name. In kindergarten many students are visual learners and when they see that their work displayed within the classroom, in the hallway, or on our website they just beam with pride.

Your help will provide my kindergarten students and classroom with opportunities that before where not possible. Those smiles that light up the classroom and the excitement of writing a story that we post on our “Writing Wall of Fame” will give parents memories that will last a life time. Just think back when you were in kindergarten, I bet you can remember even the smallest details. Well your help will provide my students with those memories, but also provide them with images that will last a lifetime.
