Snap, Watch It Grow will allow my students to record and share the growth of our school garden. One camera for our entire school is not enough to record daily events in our garden.
The students of SCAS, an Alternative School, come from all seven districts in Spartanburg County.
New students enter our school weekly and can depart our school at any given time. Based on this fluctuation in enrollment the percent of students receiving free or reduce lunch can range from 80 to 90 percent. Many of these students are living in non-traditional homes: single parent households, extended family households, foster homes, or group home settings. A large number of our students are not functioning on grade level. The majority of these students read at least two levels below their current grade. Even though these students have a great deal to overcome, if you can capture their interest and hold it, they are willing and even eager to learn.
My Project
Snap, Watch it Grow will allow more students to become involved in our garden project. At this time we have four raised beds filled with greens, collards, cabbage, and onions. Snap, Watch it Grow will enable students, who are not interested in getting dirty in the garden, an opportunity to participate by taking pictures, learning printing techniques, and learning organization and scrap booking skills. These new resources will provide my students with additional tools to facilitate learning, increase positive social skills, re-enforce positive group co-operation skills, while building self-esteem. The ability to take pictures of gardening activities will introduce new skills into our classroom. Students will learn the correct method for taking pictures, correct procedures for downloading and printing pictures, documentation and organization skill through the use of scrap booking.
Please support Snap, Watch it Grow by supplying our class with a digital camera, digital frame, printer, and scrap booking supplies.
The number of students that will benefit from this project will change weekly. By supporting this effort you will be giving my students the opportunity to Snap and Grow thus creating an additional opportunity for the second chance they deserve.
