Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fireworks bursting with creativity and hope. They are all recent immigrants to the United States, coming mostly from Mexico, but also from countries such as El Salvador and Colombia. They have dreams of becoming scientists and teachers, video game designers, doctors and artists.
Everyday, I see my students' families giving everything to support and uplift their children as best they can.
In my classroom, I aim to do the same by exposing them to a diverse range of experiences and opportunities, and by showing them everything they are capable of achieving. The arts are essential in this process, both as a form of self expression and also, as a way for them to learn about cultures different from their own, or to see themselves reflected in the world.
My Project
My students are all Latin American immigrants whose parents chose to move to the United States in order to pursue a better life for their families. However, within this country, they are not always represented in the job market, in the media or in the school curriculum. Through literature and art, I have been introducing my students to cultures that are different from their own, so they can understand the diversity that exists within the United States. However, I have also searched for mediums through which they can see themselves and their own stories represented.
As part of their final project for the fourth grade, students will have the opportunity to create their own biographies, and thus, take ownership over their stories.
This semester-long project will involve the creation of different chapters (including planning, drafting, editing and revising) that will culminate in a book which will be presented by each student at the end of the year. A second portion of the project consists of an exhibition of photographs taken by each student of their lives outside of school. This class camera is what the students will learn photography with, and then take home to document their stories.
