Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade at a high poverty school. Our school has adopted a writing program that in one year's time has made a difference in how our students write. However, it requires the daily use of colored pencils.
Each part of speech is color coded and by the second week of school, my second graders are beginning to have a deep understanding of each part of speech. It has proved to be an effective way to deliver the instruction, however, at times their pencils break during instruction and I was only able to purchase enough for teams of four to share their pencils. Momentum gets lost when students stop to sharpen the pencils they share and it is distracting to hear the manual sharpener while teaching.
We need a heavy duty sharpener along with colored pencils and regular #2 pencils. Financing this project would allow my pencil sharpener helper to have sharpened pencils at hand, both colored and otherwise because they will be sharpened ahead of time each day. Our momentum will hold strong. Instructional time will continue and I know the pacing of our lessons will be more effective. I can only imagine how much better our writers will do when they have access to ready-to-go materials!
