This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 20 individually amazing and collectively diverse, first grade students, at a Title I school, in west Charlotte, North Carolina. Many of my students’ families live below the poverty line, so my kids come to class with a lot of baggage and not a lot of supplies.
My funny, bright, and courageous students are working hard this year, to learn more than just how to read and solve math problems.
We focus on respecting others, on learning how to express our feelings in an appropriate way, and how to be engaged members of our community.
All of the teachers at our school are dedicated to working hard to help all of our students become better learners and more compassionate people.
My Project
While all of my students are given free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast at school, sometimes it is not enough to get them through the day without getting a little hungry. Students who are hungry are too focused on when they will be eating next to pay attention to the important things going on in the classroom. By allowing my students a snack time, not only will I be helping them stay more focused on their school work, but will also allow for a quick "brain break" in between activities. My students love to munch on Nutri-Grain bars while independently reading at the end of the day. The small bags that carry fruit snacks and veggie straws are easily handed out and thrown away after they are eaten so we don't make a mess. Donations to this project will help my students become more focused learners.
