This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school, located in the heart of Orange, New Jersey, is the only middle school in the city. The school uniquely houses students between the ages of 13-15, grades 8th and 9th creating a mixture of struggle, instability and dependency. Our students struggle daily with their social and emotional needs; some unable to attain the basic needs and keep up with the school’s uniform policy. Our students deal with personal, family, social and educational obstacles that make their daily functioning more than difficult to manage.
Some of our students have lost parents and are forced to play the parent and older sibling roles.
For leisure, they find success in joining sports or a book club desperate for a better future for themselves. Over 50% of the school is/are of a Caribbean and/or Hispanic descent. A large portion of those students have parents who cannot guide them through their education. Parents/Guardians are unfamiliar with the culture and struggling financially to support their families with 3 to 4 jobs, most of the time in a single parent household.
We would like to make our school a one stop shop of necessities for students and their families in need. The uniform policy in our district assists students with being on time, embarrassment not having had the coolest gear or attending school with dirty uniform, many of them cannot afford. Having uniforms available for students during the school day, will relieve the stress of students and their families who cannot afford them. We need a system in place so that our youth can go out into the world looking their best, so they can be their best in the classroom as well as socially, and emotionally among their peers. Imagine wearing the same uniform every day for a week (dirty, odors), or missing school because your mom could not afford to do laundry? We can not neglect the mental and physical health of our students, but shove a book in front of their face.
In today's society bullying, hygiene, and confidence are important factors among middle school students.
Our parents work long hours, throughout the day and overnight in order to support their children. Students have difficulties with arriving to school on time because they don't have a reliable source to wake them up. Having alarm clocks available for our student can decrease the tardiness within our school.
The winter is arriving and we want to make sure our students have weather gear as they walk to and from school.
This project aims to be a sufficient significant help to a community of kids usually counted out. A decent uniform will provide more than just clothes, but days, weeks, and an entire school year of success for our scholars.
