Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10 energetic, eager students with Autism. Some of my students are verbal and others use pictures to communicate and learn. Most of my students have sensory issues and have a hard time sitting and focusing.
I am a special education teacher working in an urban, high-need community.
Our school is a Title I school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students have a wide range of abilities, many coming from homes where English is not spoken in their home.
My Project
For many of my students, their primary deficits are in communication and often times they can't express that they are hungry. Snack time is the perfect time to work on communication and social skills. Having a variety of snack choices will offer many communication opportunities for my students, as well as fill their bellies. We know full bellies ensure that brains are on and students are available to learn. These snacks will make that possible.
Chips, Doritos and cheese crackers are their favorites.
These snacks may not be the healthiest choices but many of my students have food aversions and eat very limited diets. I know that these are the snack items they prefer. Cheese is a favorite flavor so the Doritos and Cheez-Its are highly preferred items. The candy items will be used as edible reinforcers for work tasks. Everyone will work for a treat!
Your help will provide us with snacks to keep working and learning!
