My students attend a Title I school in Richmond. They are full of potential and enjoy learning. Second grade is a wonderful transitional year! Second Grade is a pivotal year for students' future academically. Many of my students have stressors in their home lives that hinder their academic progress. It is vital to ensure the school environment is a safe haven for these students.
I want to make sure I have the resources to great a safe learning environment and the supplies to meet the needs of my students to ensure they excel to the best of their ability.
Worrying about if you will be hungry over a weekend or after school is a feeling no child should ever experience. Some students live with this fear on a daily basis due to homelessness or being displaced. Having resources available in the classroom to send a student home with snacks at the end of the day or week not only eases the mind of the students, but also my mind that my students will have snacks, such as crackers, meat sticks, raisins, and fruit snacks available just in case. Also, students benefit from having access to fresh toothbrushes and toothpaste to freshen up after having yummy snacks. It is important to encourage students to practice good dental hygiene at an early age.
Knowing that basic needs, such as combating hunger, can be met will provide some of the students in my class with the mindset that they are in a safe and welcoming environment.
This in turn will increase the ability for the students to focus on learning, rather than the rumbling in their tummy.
