Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large, diverse population of immigrant, refugee families from a variety of Latin American countries. Our school is a Title I (schools with large concentrations of low-income students) school. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom.
Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.
Some of the students in my classes suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language) and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.
My Project
It is my goal to establish a much-needed class pantry in order to provide a healthy snack to my students between breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. Having a snack between meals prevents you from becoming so hungry that you reach for unhealthy junk food. Many of my students do not have a healthy breakfast at home so they tend to start getting hungry before lunchtime. Healthy snacking provides a child’s brain with the nutrients it needs, and missing out on healthy snacks can negatively affect school performance.

It is my wish to create an in-class pantry and to provide all of my students with a healthy snack alternative before lunchtime each day. I plan to hand out a daily snack to my students during our recess time. It is for this purpose that I am requesting the storage cabinet, granola bars, Kellogg's treats, cookies, and chips. This will allow my kiddos to stay on task and focused as they engage in their educational endeavors.
