This year, I am working at a charter school in an inner-city neighborhood with very limited funding. Every day my students face many challenges and hardships from their environment. Despite some of the challenges, my students continue to come to school every single day. However, keeping students actively engaged can sometimes be challenging due to limited resources. You can help change their minds about learning and prove to them that someone out there wants the best for them.
Making school fun while learning is all I really want for my students.
I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience in my class. By making school a place they want to go, I am hoping to inspire our learners to continue to love school and move forward with a positive attitude about their education.
My Project
I want to help fulfill my scholars' needs in and out of school. By supplying them with food, I can begin building stronger relationships where they trust me and want to come to school every day to learn. Some of my students only eat while they are at school. Students leave school at 3:30 pm and they may not eat until 7:45 am the next morning! Some of my students experience homelessness - some are constantly moving homes, living in hotels or living in shelters. It's an unfortunate situation, but these snacks will show my students someone is there for them and is capable of feeding them!

My scholars spend over three hours straight in the classroom in the afternoon. With lunch being at 11:00, they are starving by 1:30-2:00 every single day. It's hard and makes learning even harder. Some of my students miss the bus or even just run late and when they do the first meal of the day is usually lost. By supplying my students with the essentials they need, I hope to create a warm, safe environment where my students are not afraid to ask for the things they may need in and out of school.
