This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a high-poverty neighborhood and have experienced more challenges than anyone ever should. The students come from all different backgrounds, but most come from homes where there are economic struggles. These struggles infiltrate the academic environment and progress of this population.
We, as educators, must provide differentiated opportunities to express students' applied knowledge in authentic ways.
Providing this opportunity reflects best practices to support the development of the urban student as we strive to prepare these students for college and career readiness.
My Project
"Mrs. Sertuche, do you have any food?" It's a question I get often during the school day, especially late in the day. Students often have a very long day of school, with classes in different parts of the building, and then stay even later for tutoring, office hours, sports, and other extra curricular activities. They are growing individuals that need a lot of fuel, and a balance of nutrition to keep them healthy, alert and ready to learn.
Some of our students experience food insecurity, and don't know where their next meal is going to come from.
I want to be able to provide my students with the safety and security of a snacks for them to eat whenever they need. We want small, easily portable snacks, including individual bags of baked chips and granola bars. These foods will be something that they still want to eat, with some healthier options included to help them start making smarter choices about the food they eat. This way, if students are staying late in the building, or missed a meal from home, they are able to feed their stomachs and their minds.
