Snacks Keep High School Students Focused!

My Project

As a special education teacher I see many students throughout the day. I teach small group classes as well as co-teach in humanities and have an advisory. One thing that ALL my students love is snacks and food they can make with hot water or a microwave.

Recently during an SEL lesson I asked my classes what they'd change about school if they were the principal; their answer was snacks in every classroom.

With my last project you made that happen for all the classes that I teach! I am submitting a new project so that we can continue to have snacks, and chose their favorites. They LOVE all kinds of hot and spicy snacks (takis and hot cheetos are by far their favorites) as well as cup of noodles. I try to only get snacks that are more sustaining (tuna salad and cracker kits, beef jerky, protein bars, etc) and healthy in case the student didn't get a chance to eat lunch or needs to bring something home to eat over the weekend.

Sour candy and mints are for when students are taking tests or need help moving through emotion. It's a strategy that I teach students who might need a little extra support in remaining school appropriate throughout the day.

Growing up in Hawaii we would bond through eating food, and I'm so happy to be able to have food as a way to bond with all the students that I serve throughout the day. I recently set up a tea station and am very excited to have these hot water cups and sugar packets to add to the tea station!

I have seen the power of students feeling connected with their peers through food, and being able to focus better with a full stomach. Thank you!
