Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a family, a growing family! Each and every student walks into my room with a unique personality and learning style. They each bring something special to my classroom and I just love each and every special thing about them. I see every student that walks into my class as my own child because starting Day One we become a family!
The students that make up my class are strong readers, struggling readers, mathematicians, scientists and explorers, but overall, thinkers!
We love to learn new things and perfect the old. We learn by getting our hands into everything we learn. My students love to talk, sing, chant, and repeat so, we are not a quiet bunch of learners and I wouldn't have it any other way!
Every school year is always a new adventure. I welcome the start of a new school year and can't wait to meet my new students that will grow into a new family!
My Project
My students are always so hungry by the afternoon! We eat an early lunch at 11:45 and have a very long afternoon until they get home around 3:30. Since I carry out my reading/writing groups in the afternoon, the students are tired - which make them very unmotivated to learn and work to their best potential. I am constantly hearing, "I am hungry, is it snack time yet?" or "my stomach hurts", which usually means that they may not have eaten the school lunch that day. Since my students come from low-income families, they rely on the school for their breakfast, lunch, and snack. Unfortunately, many parents cannot always provide these meals, or even a snack for their child. My students only have the district provided snack of vegetables or fruit in the afternoon. That sounds great, but, unfortunately, these items are provided sporadically during the week and come in bags and at times, do not look very appetizing.
I would like to be able to offer my students a variety of food items and fruit juices during the afternoon so that no child has to go without a snack.
The snacks I would like to be able to provide for my students are pretzels, crackers, and 100 percent fruit juices that will provide them with that extra "boost" to get them through the day! It would be fabulous if I were able to provide my students with a little pick-me-up each afternoon to keep them focused and ready to learn.
