This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students live in a rapidly changing area of Seattle, impacted by the tech boom and subsequent disruption of our long-standing communities. It's impossible not to notice the effect of gentrification on our students and families, but they are empowered critical thinkers who are devoted to creating change.
They are compassionate, conscious, and community-oriented.
They understand the climate in which we live and work, and how important it is to receive an equitable education. It is because of this that I am asking for classroom supplies and food to make sure that they feel cared for and nurtured.
My Project
As the dean of students at our high school, I meet daily with students for reentry, re-engagement, and restorative justice. I serve the entire school and, on average, see about 150 students a day. These students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but all have one thing in common: they deserve nutritious snacks to keep them focused and energized throughout the day. I continue to have students in and out of my room before, during, and after the school day asking if I have anything to eat.
Your donation will go directly to purchasing snacks for students such as chips, granola bars, and juice.
This list of items is student-developed as I met with students to get their input on what they would like best. I'm lucky enough that students feel comfortable enough to come to me when they're hungry or needing a snack, and I'd like to continue providing them with these items but am unable to make weekly trips to the grocery store.
