Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a group of dedicated, hard-working, eager-to-learn sixth-graders from low-income backgrounds; many of whom come from single-parent homes, while some live with grandparents and/or relatives. Many of my student population come with IEPs which require individualized interventions to help all students succeed. This comes with varying levels of learning challenges and more effort on my part to keep them engaged as often as possible.
When expectations are set high and excuses are left at the door, success is a requirement as opposed to an option.
My Project
My students are 6th graders, coming from another school, and just switching over from remote learning at the beginning of this school year. They are very impressionable and this is the best time to mold them into the successful scholars of the future.
Math is important of course, but I predominantly try to teach them about manners, hard work, organization, dedication, that you can learn from your mistakes, to help each other, that they are WORTH IT, and ultimately that they can do anything they put their mind and effort into.
So far this year, nearly even single one of my students passed Math on their own and most of them are doing better than they ever have before because of these lessons that they have learned. They are setting goals they never believed they could achieve and surpassing them with ease.
These snacks will serve as rewards to encourage them to continue working hard throughout the remainder of the school year in order to ensure ultimate success and achievement.
