Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school for recent immigrants. All of my students have come to the US within the past few years, and all are learning English and adjusting to a new culture and environment.
As recent immigrants, my students come into the classroom with a wide range of life experiences, skills, and inspiring personal stories.
I work closely with a team of teachers to support all of our students as they learn English and gain an understanding of how to navigate life in the United States.
My Project
I've decided once again to embark on a campaign to supply my classroom with a snack cupboard for hungry students! Nearly all of my students live with family members, friends, or guardians who work multiple jobs with grueling schedules. As such, many students' guardians are not present in the mornings when the students leave for school, and many students arrive at school hungry. Unfortunately, many students also miss the end of breakfast (their buses are often delayed) and lack the calories - and thus energy - needed to make it through a day of learning.
Simply put, there is not enough food for our kiddos to ward off hunger and maintain focus throughout the day.
While teachers can continue to fund snacks out of their own pockets to give students some energy, this is not financially sustainable for many.
In this project, I'm recreating the snack cupboard that I started at my previous school in California. There, the snack cupboard helped our students meet their basic needs so that they could focus on their academics rather than their stomach. Now, in Seattle, we are hoping to stock energy bars, crackers, and other snacks to help students get the energy boost they need to engage in learning!
