Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 20 second graders in a science and technology charter school focused on Project Based Learning. We are located in an area with a lower than national mean income. Many times this means that the families of the learners I teach do not have the means to have personal libraries at home. Sometimes, it also means not having a reliable adult to encourage reading, growing their creativity, and instilling a desire to learn.
The addition of elementary is brand new at our school, so in order to create these learning opportunities, I often have to provide supplies from my own income.
The children in my classroom love to create, read, and learn and crave more opportunities to do so. I try to incorporate art, music, science, and movement wherever I can fit it in as to not lose these creative outlets and keep their imaginations growing.
My Project
Our classroom is in need of shelf-stable, fulfilling snacks to help them on Tuesdays. Our school has an adjusted schedule putting our lunch before 11am, while the learners are still here until 3:30, making our afternoons long and sometimes hard to focus.
Being able to give them a snack, especially on these days has been super helpful in their attention and readiness to learn.
However, it is hard having to provide snacks for all learners out of my own pocket. Please help me fulfill my list to give them snacks to get through those long afternoons!
I am also asking for table caddies and gallon size bags to help our tables stay organized. The bags are to help keep their headphones organized and prevent them from tangling with others.
