Our school has a diverse community of students who are from all different economic statuses to different ethnic backgrounds. Of the approximately 1160 students reported in the 2017- 2018 students enrolled, the student body consists of approximately 34% White, 31% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 23% Asian, 5% Hispanic, and 1% Black (6% Other).
My Project
It's common knowledge that teens go through an exponential period of growth during adolescence. During this time, it's important for teens to snack in between meals. In fact, snacking has been link to boosting well-being, improving energy, and promoting academic success. What's more is that food also has an important role in Native Hawaiian culture. Because our school has approximately 30% Native Hawaiian student population, it is important to align counseling practices with indigenous culture and values.
The Hawaiian proverb “I ola no ke kino i ka mā‘ona o ka ‘ōpū", translates to , "the body enjoys health when the stomach is well filled" (ON#1246).
I'm hoping to promote good health for my students by providing them with snacks that will help sustain their hunger throughout the day. This, in turn, will help them be the best version of themselves both inside and outside of the classroom.
Students come by my office to ask if I have any food almost every day of the week, and they are almost always disappointed to learn that I have none. So, materials from this project will be used to fill a "snack section" in my office. I plan to lay out the snacks for students to grab as needed. In doing so, I hope to foster healthy relationships with my students.
