My students come in every day raring and ready to go! Our day always begins with several hugs and exciting news that they have to share with me. To be surrounded by children who love you despite your flaws, can't wait to see you every day, and think you hung the moon is the greatest gift in the world!
The majority of my students come from high poverty homes, and many don't have Internet access at home.
It is not uncommon for students to come to second grade on a first grade level. Because of this, it seems that we are playing catch up for most of the year.
Luckily, I teach in a wonderful school where teachers are willing to share resources and do whatever it takes to help students achieve success. Although many of my students are facing various challenges including broken homes, being raised by grandparents, and high poverty, they are very motivated learners.
My Project
My students are expected to bring a snack from home each day for snack time. Unfortunately, many students are not able to do so for various reasons.
Every day my students have the opportunity to earn tickets in the classroom for being good citizens, showing responsibility, and being kind to others.
Students are then able to use those tickets in my class store to purchase small toys and candy.
I am requesting snack items such as popcorn, pretzels, and granola bars to add to my class store so students will also have the opportunity to buy snacks when they need to do so. These snacks will not only help my students continue to learn about the importance of economics, but it will also help curb their hunger.
