My Students

My students are diverse kids from different countries from Latin America. Our school is located in a low-income area in Houston, Texas and over 90% of the school's population is economically disadvantaged. My students are all bilingual students who are still recovering from the devastation that was caused earlier last year by Hurricane Harvey. Not many of them were directly affected by the hurricane but a few students did experience flooding and were forced to move to a different apartment. Because of the trauma they have experienced, I want to create an environment where they feel safe. I want them to look forward to coming to school and feel completely engaged in all the learning activities.

Many of my students come to school hungry and tired on a daily basis.

This is in part due to the fact that most of these kids only get one meal per day. This meal is usually received at school. When they go back home, food is scarce. As a result, our students come to school almost daily with very low energy. Despite all of these challenges, I want to be able to provide something that will make their days much more bright and

With these snacks and drawer organizer cart, my students will be able to experience real life customer experiences.

The organizer cart will be used to store all of the snacks( Nabisco Cookies and Welch's Fruit Snacks). Students will become cashiers and customers during math rotations. Students will earn their money depending on how they are performing in the classroom. Students with great behavior and great academic performance can earn up to 2 (fake) dollars per day. They can use that money to buy a snack. Snacks will be all labeled with different prices. Students will be responsible to count their money and figure out the amount of change they will be getting back. Students will be allowed to snack in the classroom at the end of the day. They are all responsible to clean up after they are done snacking. The clorox wipes will be used to help clean up and disinfect the classroom after snacking.
