Help me give my students water and snacks such as pretzels, fruit snacks, and crackers for when they need a little pick-me-up in order to stay focused.
"When's lunch?" "It's hot!" "I'm thirsty!" These are phrases I hear often in my full-day kindergarten classroom. Especially early in the year when it is still very warm, and my students are adjusting to a longer day without a regularly scheduled snack time and naps!
Our school is located in a high poverty, urban neighborhood, and funding in our district, as in many others, is being stretched very thin.
Staff is being cut and budgets are very lean, however, the expectations are higher than ever. I want to make sure that my students have the best opportunity to flourish in their time with me.
My Project
The snacks and drinks you would help provide by contributing to this project will be used in many different ways to benefit my students. The bottled water will be distributed on those sweltering days (we have no air conditioning) that the kids need to stay hydrated. The healthy snacks will be used as a whole-class snack, reward, or individual snack to nourish a student that may have missed breakfast. So often, I find students being distracted and not getting the full benefit of learning because they are hot, thirsty, or hungry. Additionally, some of the snacks I've selected will be used in math activities such as making an M&M graph or using the Goldfish to model addition and subtraction. Lastly, I have selected snacks that will meet dietary restrictions of some of my students who require peanut-free, fat-free and/or gluten-free snacks that can be used at times they may not be able to have a snack that a classmate brings in to share.
By supporting this project and providing my class with snacks and water, you will be helping my students stave off hunger and stay hydrated during our school day.
