Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth-year special education teacher at a Title I high school in New Mexico.
I have a wonderful group of students who I have the privilege to teach.
They are clever, fun, hard-working, and ready to learn. However, there is little to no funding at our school for special education. I teach five classes, three of which have limited or outdated resources. I am a life skills, vocational skills, occupational skills, and English 9-12 grade teacher for students on the career pathway for graduation.
I want to provide my students with the quality education they deserve, but I have limited funds to do this. I supply all school supplies because my students are from high poverty/low-income households. I order a lot of materials with my own money, just so I have something relevant to teach.
My Project
I often have students who come to class hungry and are unable to focus on their learning. I believe that if people don't have their basic needs met, then they cannot function at their best.
My students are unable to focus on their learning and do their best because they often come to school hungry and do not have enough to eat.
These snacks will help give my students the help they need to be successful in class. If they have their basic needs met, such as enough food to eat, then they will be happier and more successful in the classroom.
