Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income, high poverty neighborhood in Chicago. Over 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds.
My middle schoolers are passionate, highly motivated individuals who are passionate about school and love challenging themselves every day.
My classroom includes children who come from families experiencing poverty, have limited English proficiency or have learning disabilities. However, they all enjoy discovering, working, and learning together and encourage each other in and out of school. Despite the challenges they face, our teachers always try to create meaningful academic and social-emotional experiences that pique their interests.
This year, I have the honor of teaching sixth graders. Creating a fun, educational activities will allow my students to have a more engaging and creative school year as well as create great memories with their friends.
My Project
Most growing teens are already hungry an hour after the day started, right after lunch, or before the day is over, which often results in the students' lack of focus and motivation during class time. Items such as granola bars and cookies will be used as a much needed "late breakfast," for those students who can't make it in time for the breakfast that's served at school, and those students who we know are not able to get that extra meal when they get home. Drinking orange juice in the morning is also a better option than the soda and sweet drinks they come to school with. By providing our students with healthier options, they can be focused and stay energized instead of getting a sugar rush and feeling tired and drowsy even before the day is over.
By supporting this project you will be helping in supplying some of the basic needs students lack, before coming to school.
Having these items available will allow my students to focus, feel secure and valued.
