Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 490+ of the brightest, most caring, and hard working students I have ever worked with! They love making music and usually come to the music room to make music at all times: breakfast before school, lunch, study hall (can't blame them!) and afters chool. They are great musicians in the making, and some of them are in bands and even play gigs!
My students come from all over the world, and there are over 20+ languages spoken in my school, music being the common one!
We are so lucky to have a heterogeneous community and learn from each other!
Our school norms are: "We are committed to peace, diversity and growth." I cannot think if a better way to embody those habits of life than to make music with each other and for our community!
My Project
Nothing like food to build community, and to combat Hunger! I will give these snacks to our amazing, and hungry, teens who show up every Thursday and Friday after school to organize social justice campaigns around the school. They also play music, organize musical events at school, and are all around “dope young humans!” These snacks will help us start our social emotional circle check-ins while "breaking bread" so to speak. The number one reason my students say they have a hard time focusing in afterschool is that they are so hungry, and although the DOE does supply them with snacks, they are just not enough. Did you know that elementary school kids and high school kids get the same size snack? Ugh, somehow we gotta teach them that equality and equity are not the same.
