This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My second-grade students are 45 boys and girls who come to school each day eager to learn. The kids are sweet and kind souls who are trying their best to succeed academically — yet, it is often a struggle. My classroom population is roughly 50% English language learners and 50% African-American students. Our school population is primarily African-American and Hispanic, and at our school, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite being economically challenged, these kids are true go-getters and lovers of learning.
They embrace everything I am teaching them. They love school and thirst for knowledge. School is a safe haven for many of my students.
My Project
Our school is a year-round school and we have been back in session since July 19th. Already, my sweet students need a helping hand.
We are in dire need of uniform shirts and snacks due to the large population of homeless students in my classes.
My students are often lacking the basic essentials for school that they need. Uniform shirts are an everyday item that the students must wear. The need for clean and new uniforms for daily use can make or break a child's start on their day. I have many homeless students who need new shirts. This is round 1 of my requests.
Secondly, we need some snacks that I can send home with the students to eat and that they will eat. I feed my students snack daily in class since we don't eat lunch until 1 pm even though we arrive at school at 8 am. I also need snacks to send home with my students who have housing challenges and lack of food at home.
