My students need to continue to have healthy snacks, such as; crackers, chips, granola, rice cakes, and fruit snacks to help them focus and succeed in school and on their tests & quizzes throughout the year.
I teach 8th-grade special education in a low-income/high poverty Title I school in Upstate NY. This is my 14th year in the district. Many of my students come from single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. My students are faced daily with challenges in and out of the classroom. This causes them to "check out" often in their classes. I like to find ways to increase their engagement, thus increasing their success in school.
Being a special education consultant teacher, many of my students have attention issues such as ADHD, as well as academic needs, which prevent them from focusing on classes and achieving success.
I strive to find new, up-to-date, creative ideas that can be incorporated into their learning, to increase their overall success in 8th grade.
Working in my district is tough on most days, but I love to find ways for my students to realize the importance of their education. I forge such great bonds with my students, and for me, that in itself is a great success!
My Project
At the end of last year, I did "Snacking for Success" to help keep students focused and successful on their end of the year state exams. This year, I am doing the same thing, but with the day to day school year in mind. My students do not always have access to snacks-healthy or otherwise. They ask for snacks to get them through the day like crackers, chips, fruit snacks, rice cakes, and granola bars. Many of them don't eat breakfast and always complain about being hungry. In years previous, I have purchased their snacks throughout the year, but since learning how wonderful Donor's Choose is, I thought I would use this avenue first.
It remains my professional belief that when students have a healthy snack, their minds become hyper-focused and they are more successful when taking their tests.
These snacks can also be an incentive to students when they complete the tasks they need to in school.
