Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a low social economic background. Our school is a Title I school, therefore 100% of them receive free lunch. My students come from immigrant families so many are the first in their family to receive an education. Many parents are illiterate in their own native language and English. Many of my students came to America after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. My students need a lot of support in the classroom because they do not get enough help at home.
Beyond the academic piece is the emotional and social aspect of being uprooted from your home.
Many students don't come to school properly dressed, fed or prepared for the cold winter months.
Please help me provide more learning opportunities as well as healthy and nutritional items in my classroom to help make their transition smoother on a daily basis.
My Project
Every morning, 29 of the sweetest students walk in my classroom door. Many are smiling ear to ear even though their tummies are empty and they didn't sleep well. Students in my bilingual third grade class have seen more in their short lives then I have seen in my thirty plus years on Earth. They have struggled with single family homes, being displaced by hurricanes, losing parents and loved ones and not knowing where their next meal will come from. It is my job to educate them them. How can you ever expect them to learn when they are hungry or under the weather.
Aristotle said, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all".
It is my hope with the Snyder's Pretzels, and Nutri-grain Bars I can keep their tummies from rumbling while engaging their minds to wonder and explore. With the Clorox wipes, sponges, disinfectant and Lysol spray I hope to at the end of each day, to clean off all the germs and worries of the day and to start fresh the next morning. Starting small and investing in their health and well being will pay dividends later and show my students just how much they matter.
