This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 400 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Ninety percent qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in academics, and business.

We promote college and career readiness through literacy programs with year-round experiences that include many work-based and service-learning opportunities for all our hard-working students including those economically disadvantaged and students with special needs.

My Project

Although my students are hard working, they often lack monetary resources for snacks to hold them over between meals. Often when fighting the struggles of the MTA just to get to school their meals are skipped and/or poor choices made. I want more for my students.

Providing a small snacks in the classroom provides many benefits, including improving academic performance, attendance, engagement, and reducing hunger and food insecurity.

My students are hard-working and try to take every opportunity to succeed. It's hard to succeed when your stomach is growling and your mind is distracted by how you can hold out to the next meal. It's hard to compete when you haven't eaten. It's hard to compete when hungry. Having snacks on hand greatly help them to stay focused.
