My students come in every day raring and ready to go! Our day always begins with several hugs and exciting news that they have to share with me. To be surrounded by children who love you despite your flaws, can't wait to see you every day, and think you hung the moon is the greatest gift in the world!
The majority of my students come from high poverty homes, and many don't have Internet access at home.
It is not uncommon for students to come to second grade on a first-grade level. Because of this, it seems that we are playing catch up for most of the year. Luckily, I teach in a wonderful school where teachers are willing to share resources and do whatever it takes to help students achieve success. Although many of my students are facing various challenges including broken homes, being raised by grandparents, and high poverty, they are very motivated learners.
My Project
In our district, kindergarten and first grade students are required to send snacks to school. By the time these children get to second grade, most of them are able to make it through the day without a snack. However, my students this year are a hungry bunch! They begin asking when lunch is around 9:30 am. At that point in the day, they still have to wait 2 hours for lunch! They have begged me to buy them snacks to eat mid-morning, but of course that is nearly impossible on a teacher's budget. My students brainstormed an idea. They could bring their own snacks! It was a great idea that would work out for many of my students.
However, for students who live in poverty stricken homes, having extra snacks around the house is a luxury that for many, simply can't be afforded.
The beauty of my project is that it will benefit those who need it the most. My students who are able to, will provide their own snacks. My students who don't have snacks will be provided with them by generous donors such as yourself. I'm so proud of my students for problem solving to come up with a solution for their hunger pains
