Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students saw their neighborhood flood due to Hurricane Harvey. They came back to a gutted-out school due to this storm. They picked up right where they left. My students are from a Title I school and they are currently going through their language transition year -- that is, they are going from learning all in Spanish to learning their core subjects in all English.
Having a classroom that is more clean and healthy is our goal.
My students face one of their biggest challenges this year --taking all three state tests -- math, reading and writing -- in English! Being healthy and well-fed will help them get through it all. Most of my students come from monolingual families that cannot offer them support at home with the transition that they are going through.
This project is necessary to help my students increase their chances at advancing in their studies through keeping healthy and clean. They will have less absences and increase their productivity while in class. Help my class move forward in a clean and healthy way.
My Project
We are requesting healthy snacks that will help my students to keep their hunger at bay during class time. We usually have a break during which the kids enjoy a snack and practice conversing in English with their peers. However, fewer and fewer kids are bringing snacks from home.
This population of kids is of a low-income background, and it is a challenge for the parents to provide snacks for their kids five days per week.
Therefore, the snacks in this project will go towards helping my students keep focused on learning instead of being distracted by hunger. The facial tissues will help keep the students germ-free. It is flu season, and allergy season is soon approaching. I hope to provide a cleaner environment to my kids through these materials.
