We need items to put into a brown bag snack pack for students who are economically disadvantaged, but we want to offer it to all 6th-graders in order to be equitable and respectful.
Our middle school has an amazing leadership group of students with the title--WEB leaders. A WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) leader is someone who was recommended, accepted and trained to be someone who makes a huge difference with our incoming 6th-graders. The WEB program is a student-led program where 8th-grade leaders lead activities on 6th-grade orientation day. Every two leaders have a small group of 6th-graders who they work with on this day and in monthly social and academic activities throughout the year.
Along with being a positive influence and role model for our incoming students at our school, these leaders exemplify respect and responsibility for our entire student population. They are encouraged to seek out ways to make life at the middle school a safe, comfortable place to learn. Our WEB leaders work to build confidence and trust and assist our 6th graders as they transition into more complicated social and academic lives.
Our school district has had a steady rise in our economically disadvantaged student population. A group of 8th-graders wants to do something to help the 6th-graders in our school feel welcome and healthy. There is concern that many kids go home over a holiday break with not much to eat. Many kids depend on the school lunch program and without it they go hungry. During these times, our WEB leaders want to put together a small snack pack that includes some healthy snacks to help them through these tough times. In order to prevent them from standing out from their peers, we'd like to offer the snack packs to all 6th-grade students in an effort to be responsive to the needs of all students. We are in need of any healthy snacks, personal hygiene items, or gift cards that might put a smile on the faces of students who don't expect much but deserve everything.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to make a difference in someone's life by showing that we care. Maybe by doing this, it will start something bigger and better for these kids. We just want all kids to have something to eat and not go hungry. Our goal is to take a step towards ending hunger in our school community.
By doing this, our group is taking a step to help our community. When others see kids helping other kids, we set an example for more to get involved. As a leader in our school, it is our responsibility to recognize how we can help make life easier for our student body at least when they are inside school walls.
This project is important because it can help in more than one way. Besides solving some sadness, it might just help someone not be hungry over a long break. It is upsetting to know that there are kids our age that are homeless. We want to help solve this problem.
