Help me give my students the opportunity to practice vocational skills through the use of a snack cart. They will be able to wear a uniform (aprons and gloves) while learning money management skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a Title I special education school, with students in grades K-8. All of my students have some level of disability, ranging from moderate to severe. Diagnoses include autism, Down syndrome, emotionally disturbed, intellectually disabled, or multiple handicaps.
My students are SO much more than their labels and their IQ scores.
They need the opportunities to learn through adapted, hands-on materials. They learn best by DOING, not watching or listening. My students have the potential to one day join their community and maintain jobs if given the opportunity and support. I truly believe that we need to teach to our individual students, and for my children, that means tactile learning.
My Project
My students have moderate to severe autism. Many of them have limited exposure to places in their community and spend the majority of their time at home or at school. Due to this, they need extra resources and experiences to prepare them for future vocational opportunities.
My students will learn about essential job skills such as wearing a uniform, managing money, and appropriate customer/clerk interactions.
They will practice independently putting on aprons and gloves, while simultaneously learning about hygiene when working around food. The dollars, coins, and register will help them master money management skills, further preparing them for a future job out in the community. The bins will help them learn to sort items by category in the snack cart.
