Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school in South Carolina. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Around 40% of our students come from non-English speaking homes, which puts them at a disadvantage when learning to read and write. Most of our students' families also lack the resources to provide books and other educational supplies for their children to use at home.
Despite their economic disadvantages, my students are eager to learn how to read and write.
They love experiencing new texts that they can read at school and take home to share with their families. My students enjoy reading, and I want to ensure that they will continue to read and learn throughout their lives.
My Project
Many of my students come to school hungry each and everyday. Due to this lack of a basic need being met my students sometimes have a difficult time focusing throughout the day. When students are unable to focus due to hunger they are not learning and reaching their full potential.
These snacks will make a difference in my students learning by helping them meet their basic needs so that they are better able to focus on learning.
No one likes to be hungry or have wonder about where their next meal will come from. These simple snacks will help to make my students more comfortable and curve their hunger to allow learning to take place.
