I am a 1st-grade teacher at a Title I school in Maryland. My students come to school with food insecurity, challenges at home, and unique learning needs. My students and their families are amazing, and so deserving of awesome things and the highest quality education and environment.
In my previous experience working in a Title I school, I recognize the challenges that students come to the classroom with, and that learning may not be the first thing on their minds.
I hope having more resources for my students and myself can help to push them in their learning, engagement, and enrich their daily classroom experiences.
My Project
My students are amazing children with bright futures; they are inquisitive, kind, and excited to be in school! Our classroom has been fortunate to have had previous projects funded to create a classroom snack bar where students in need can grab extra breakfast items, snacks during the school day, and small microwaveable meals to take home with them after school. Many of my students have expressed concerns about food insecurity and tend to hoard food items out of fear of not having food, or having enough food when they are at home.
Our snack bar goes through at least 35 snacks/microwave meals per day and 10-15 drinks from the fridge.
Many students do not have a reusable water bottle, so they rely on the beverages in the snack bar refrigerator. Feeding these students and ensuring their most basic needs are met is a lot of work, but no one is more deserving of that effort than these children. We appreciate your support and help with feeding our hungry 1st-grade scholars, and future leaders!
