My Students

On any given day in my library, approximately one-third of our student body - 300 students - visit to learn, question, explore, discuss, debate, interact, and collaborate. Joyce Valenza summarized what happens here best when she said, "the library should be more of a kitchen than a grocery store." Students at my school converge in the 6th grade from four different and socioeconomically distinct elementary schools of approximately 300 students, to a single middle school of about 1,000 students. The variety of income levels, nationalities, home languages and cultures provides a rich daily dynamic within our student body.

My Project

As an International Baccalaureate Middle School with a diverse student body, our school's curriculum aims to help students be reflective and caring communicators. Through our annual One School Reads program, we provide students with the opportunity to think about their own experiences as they engage with peers to discuss a piece of literature. This year we are excited to read and discuss the graphic novel memoir, Smile by Raina Talgemeier in which she details her middle school experience with a witty and comforting story that resonates with anyone who has been a middle school student. By reading Smile and participating in weekly school wide activities, students will realize they have more in common with one another than they ever imagined.
