I teach a general ed. first grade class. My students come from an array of socio-economic levels. They are diverse in their educational needs and levels as well. They are commonly tied by their age and the town/area we live in. It is always a struggle to find a common ground with so many different children. All children love to write/tell about what they are involved in.
Our first graders are active learners! We know that if a student is involved in the learning process in a highly personal way, they are more apt to enjoy and retain the material. What better way to inspire a first grader than with a photo recording of themselves learning or experiencing life!!
Our class needs a digital camera that will allow them to make photo recordings and photograph items to inspire and drive their creative writing projects. Because of our diverse levels of learning and socio economic backgrounds, a digital camera would help us create a common ground to build upon. We would love to earn a digital camera for making books, recording experiments and projects, recording special occasions, and establishing a visual time line of the year. As we collect pictures of our activities, we will keep a time line of events to establish not only memories, but also a sense of time as it applies to the school calendar. The best part of all, each child in the classroom will be able to have his/her own DVD of the 2009-2010 school year. Wow!! We are counting on you to support our project and make our wishes a reality.

For some, it is hard to draw from experiences when you haven't had any. As our class learns and shares together, we can create a common background knowledge that all students can relate to. We will also be able to revisit our experiences in a timeline and save our memories forever!!
