Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A picture is worth a thousand words. And that is more true than ever in a school with a high ESL population. I am a Literacy Instructional Coach for 36 Language Arts teachers at a Title 1 school with approximately 90% free or reduced lunch. I assist teachers by providing staff development.
We are a Title 1 school with a high ESL population and many students reading below grade level.
My job as an Instructional Coach is to support teachers by modeling, conferring, observing, and providing professional development opportunities. The purpose of this is to enhance student achievement. Many of the teachers I work with daily are new to the profession and require assistance with classroom management, content knowledge, direct instruction, and assessment. All of my teachers are eager to learn the Best Practices needed to increase student learning and active engagement.
My Project
The book Smarter Charts is a guide on how to make Anchor Charts that are more beneficial to student learning. Anchor charts made by the teacher, sometimes with the students, help create a sense of ownership in the classroom. They can also be more specific to the way the content is taught in the classroom. This book will help teachers create charts that students can use on a daily basis to become independent learners. Teachers will learn how to make Anchor Charts interactive and engaging. I will provide training using this book and then provide each teacher with a copy for future reference.
Having a good visual while learning something new increases memory retention.
With the knowledge of how to make better Anchor Charts, teachers will be able to increase student learning. Teachers will learn how to make the content accessible to all the students in their classrooms from the lowest readers to the highest. This will aide in student achievement and retention of knowledge. Students will also be more responsible for their learning with easy to understand charts as a reference.
