I teach in a small, rural school and team with another first grade teacher. Between the two of us, we teach all the first graders in our one building district. Because we are so small and did not pass our tax levy, our school district is financial hardship. We wear many hats, but are driven to give our students the very best. COVID has many of our families struggling, but you wouldn't know it. They have been so supportive, doing all they can to help their children adjust to remote learning.
Our first graders are be a busy bunch with amazing hearts.
They are inquisitive, creative, kind, compassionate, silly, as well as eager to learn.
My mission is to ensure our students know that they matter, and that their potential is beyond measure.
My Project
Imagine first grade with no art. I just can't let that happen. Teaching art is one of my favorite things to do with my students. There must be creativity in remote teaching and learning. In fact I think it is essential and would like to make art kits for students to have at home.
Students that participate regularly in the arts, are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement.
Art can also improve motor skills, confidence, perseverance and focus.
We will learn about Wassily Kandinsky and be inspired to create concentric circle art using watercolors, oil pastels, or both. Piet Mondrian's art will teach us about the element of line, as well as primary and secondary colors as we cross Mondrian's lines. We will look at texture, colors and movement when we study Vincent VanGogh's Starry Night. Georgia O'Keefe's art will lead us to discuss perspective and will inspire the most beautiful first grade watercolor and oil pastel flowers you've ever seen!
