This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students all come from various backgrounds and have different abilities. Some live with both parents, some live with one parent, some live with grandparents. Some live in houses, some in apartments, and some are homeless. All of my students are considered delayed, including cognitively, developmentally, physically, and socially. I have students who do not hear English at home, students who are non-verbal, and students who speak very well. I have students who can write sentences and students who are working on pre-writing skills. All of my students are delayed in some way and need additional help with academics and life skills.
To keep my students excited and wanting to come to school, we do many hands-on activities and crafts associated with our curriculum.
We also teach cooking activities, and life skills such as loading and unloading a dishwasher, sweeping, wiping tables, sorting, washing, and folding.
78% of the students at our school receive free or reduced price meals. We also have a large portion of English Language Learners. Our school services the homeless population, as well as the many hotels, motels, extended stays, and apartments. We have a very transient population in our school.
My Project
My students need items such as glue sticks, construction paper, crayons, thicker Ticonderoga pencils, markers, binders, dry erase markers, and lined dry erase boards. The glue sticks, construction paper, and crayons will be used in our arts and crafts projects that are incorporated into our curriculum. The students enjoy using different writing materials other than a plain graphite pencil. Having the dry erase markers, crayons, and regular markers the students will be able to practice writing with other utensils. The lined dry erase boards and dry erase markers will be used to practice handwriting, writing sentences, and writing paragraphs. It will also be used for the students to learn to write their personal information. The binders will be used to help organize their daily worksheets including their morning work, their daily check in sheets, and the other worksheets for the day.
