"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use the change the world" - Nelson Mandela
A typical day in kindergarten is very active and busy.
Students continue to do much of their learning through active learning and hands-on activities. For many of my students, it is their first experience in a school setting. Many of them did not attend preschool or pre-kindergarten. They are always ready and enthusiastic about learning different things and in different ways.
As a Title I school, most of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. They are also provided with free breakfast daily. We have a large population of Limited English Proficient students. The kids do not see this as an obstacle. They are just as ready and eager to learn as anyone else.
Our school building definitely shows its age but as they say, it's what’s on the inside that counts. We have amazing students and wonderful teachers. We have many parents who volunteer their time on a weekly basis. Our school pride is evident as you walk through the hallways.
The first day of school, let alone kindergarten, is very important and very exciting not only for the students, but also for the parents. Many of the families that attend our school have very limited resources and incomes. I would like for them to enjoy this time in their children's education without having to worry about spending a lot of money on school supplies.
The school supplies that the kindergarten students will be using throughout the school year will help to develop their fine motor skills.
Many of the students learn how to write their name for the first time in kindergarten. But in order to strengthen their little hands and get them ready for writing, they must first work with Play-Doh. Once those muscles have been stimulated, the right type of pencil for their little hands will make a big difference. They will practice on notepads and sentence strips. We will also be using magnetic boards to continue to work on the handwriting motor skills. The dry erase markers will be used for the same purpose. By changing the writing instrument, students remain engaged and excited.
