Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with a safe, tranquil, and flexible learning environment where they can be successful and work comfortably.
My students are creative, encouraging and accepting of challenges.
They like to move about, appreciate learning new concepts, and love positive praise and attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households or live with extended family, and they receive a free or reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire my students to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. Flexible seating provides students with the opportunity to control the location and position of their work space. It is no secret that students need opportunities to move. When children cannot move, they become distracted and disinterested in the task at hand.
Flexible seating provides a safe means for discreet twisting, turning, and wobbling.
It also provides sensory input for students which is especially important for those who have ADD, ADHD, or ASD. Lastly, flexible seating promotes comfort while learning. Students who are comfortable are more willing to listen, focus, and complete work independently. My students need an assortment of flexible seating items for our classroom.
