I teach a self-contained special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are classified with a developmental or cognitive disabilities, but that does not prevent them from doing their best. I am fortunate enough to have great parental support from my students' families despite their daily struggles.
We are a Leader In Me School where everyone can be a leader.
Everyone has genius, and we develop the whole child by building relationships and empowering students.
My students are in grades kindergarten through fourth and spend many years with me, so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning. We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade-level content at their level of understanding.
My Project
My school has four related arts classes that teach our students music and physical fitness. We have a computer lab, and a media center—but no ART classes. How can you have related arts without visual arts? Teachers must find ways to incorporate art into academic subjects of literacy, math, social studies, and science. When we learned about different cultures, we made crafts from every country. When we did our butterfly life cycle, the students recreated the life cycle with tissue paper butterflies and twisted chenille stems for caterpillars.
Students with special needs often thrive in the area of the arts because it uses a different part of the brain allowing creativity rather than relying on memory.
We have done some amazing art projects this past year, which has depleted our supplies. We need to re-stock for next year's class to experience these awesome projects as a way to represent their learning.
We always need card stock. We love to paint and card stock is durable. We use the buttons for collage materials on several projects. Tissue paper can be used in so many different projects year round. Our Dot Markers and ink pads are dried up and we use them for stamping in art and in centers for academic work—so they get used a lot.
I would love to add some things to our classroom to help keep it neat and give defined space for their work. The easy clean trays and messy mats will help contain messes on their desks while the splash mat will help with larger projects so we don't stain the floor like we did when we made our tie-dye T-shirts for field day. Oops!
All of these items together will help us stay creative and mess-free!
