I teach second grade math, science, and social studies in a Louisiana public school. I am writing this proposal to obtain a Smart Board interactive white board for my classroom. Since becoming a teacher, I have realized that children learn by constructing meaning from their experiences and the world around them. As a teacher, one of my goals is to prepare children for life in a contemporary society. Gone are the days of textbooks and overhead transparencies. Today's students are technologically savvy and need classrooms that are technologically rich.
In an ideal classroom, every student would have their own computer. The reality of my classroom is that I have two computers. With a Smart Board, students would be able to see and more importantly interact with the screen. Lessons will be easier to see and more visually appealing than on a traditional chalkboard. The Smart Board captures and holds the student's interest. Student participation is enhanced due to the active involvement of all learners. Students play video and computer games with exciting sounds and colorful images for hours. Using a Smart Board, I will be able to bring that same enthusiasm to the classroom through the use of sound and images. Students will be stimulated just as during their favorite games. Dialogue among students will open up because even the least motivated student is enthusiastic about interacting with the board. This enthusiasm makes lessons more memorable; therefore, more knowledge is retained. Another great benefit of the Smart Board is that it is a multi-sensory learning tool that will help to meet the diverse learning styles of my students.
Children need to be involved in their learning through hands-on activities and a multitude of sensory techniques. I believe a teacher should not only help children learn but also inspire them to want to continue to learn for the rest of their lives. In order to create this type of classroom environment, students need dynamic lessons that keep them engaged during learning. The Smart Board is an awesome tool that will allow me to create interesting and engaging lessons. Concepts will come alive on the screen and create a truely interactive lesson. If my proposal is accepted, the Smart Board will allow me to create a classroom where maximum student growth is fostered through interactive, student centered lessons.
