My students are 8th graders at a small intermediate school located near Pearl Harbor in Oahu. Over half the students receive free or reduced price lunches and about 15% are English Language Learners.
My students are very energized by labs (last semester I made an announcement that we would be doing a lab during the next class, which resulted in a big 'hurrah' from the class).
I want to maximize this enthusiasm by upgrading and expanding the labs that my class performs. This request will make sure that I will be able to continue these fun labs and hopefully expand into new labs.
My Project
I will be teaching Space Science for the first time this school year and I want to get the students excited about the topic. One of the best labs for this topic is to have the students construct and launch Estes Rockets - it illustrates the various physic laws affecting space travel. Aerodynamics, nozzle construction, impulse, gravity, and orbital motion are all illustrated when learning about model rockets. The prospect of launching rockets will get the students very excited about learning this interesting topic.
I was lucky to get a number of rocket kits and launch apparatus from another teacher, but I need rocket engines, construction glue, and altitude measuring tools to complete the project.
I hope you can help me get this project off the ground!
