My students need a kidney table for optimal small group instruction.
When looking around a group of students and seeing every single hand excitedly raised, eager to share their ideas with their peers or to answer the challenging the question, when typically they'd shy away nervous to share, is one the most rewarding sights for a teacher. This is also the beauty of working within an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom.
With the availability of two teachers and a classroom full of diverse learners, our ICT is in constant motion and rearranging from lesson to lesson.
Whether it's splitting the class in two to parallel teach, providing small instructional groups, or creating stations of various learning opportunities, it is amazing to see our students thrive as individuals and become more comfortable working together and sharing without feeling nervous.
Our class consists of 25 students of very diverse cultural backgrounds as well as diverse learning styles and needs. With two teachers in the classroom, 10 students with various special needs are able to access the same rigorous curriculum as their peers, and feel comfortable doing so. Our students will always help to support one another even when they are working at different levels.
To help better accommodate the various needs of our learners, we would love to use the kidney style shaped table to lead small group instruction. Here, students can feel more comfortable working and learn at their own pace with their teacher close by to help guide them along the way. This style table allows for the teacher to oversee every student's work at once within the small group and encourages students within the group to communicate and work together as they are all able to face one another. Our small groups may consist of lower level readers encouraging each other to read aloud and advance their reading skills, or it may consist of a group of higher level math students, being pushed to work on more advanced problem-solving strategies as a team. The opportunities are endless. With the simple tool of a specially shaped table, we can make this happen.
