Help me give my students plastic stack stools for flexible seating options and dry erase boards and white board spots to encourage engagement as students LOVE to use markers !
Our school houses five hundred ten extremely diverse students who in grades K-5. We are a Title I school that has 100% free breakfast and lunch. Walking through the school is like taking a trip around the world hearing over 30 different languages and dialects. In one class you may see a young boy from Nepal who experienced trauma in a Nepali refugee camp, seated next to a girl whose first language is Swahili. This same girl may have come from Republic of Congo and may have never experienced formal schooling. Both of these students and their classmates who come from their own respective countries are being taught by a native English speaking teacher. In other classrooms, you will see children who only speak English working next to students who mastered three languages, counting English as their third.
In light of all of our differences, we are able to come together to make one very strong community whose values shine through: Kindness, Respect, and Safety.
During any given year, between 10 and 20 percent of our diverse population are on Individualized Education Programs that are based on each student's disability and their individual learning needs.
My Project
I teach reading, writing, math, and executive function skills to students in a small-group setting; they received individualized instruction designed specifically for their learning needs.
Students who come to my classroom have a variety of learning styles.
Using white boards and white board markers gives students the opportunity for repeated practice without the fear of making mistakes.
My students also need flexible seating and stackable stools allow for easy movement of chairs and creates more room at she small group instruction site. Adding these stools to the classroom environment will offer more choice to student when they come into the classroom. I am a firm believer that when given choices, children are more willing to put in full effort.
